Description

Seiko Epson Corporation (hereinafter "Epson") has developed and begun mass production of the "SG2520EGN-HFR" and "SG2520VGN-HFR," differential output*3 crystal oscillators that achieve low phase jitter*2 at the fundamental mode*1 and have expanded the upper frequency limit to 625 MHz. To keep up with the increasing data traffic in next-generation data centers, optical modules are expected to shift from 800 Gbps to 1.6 Tbps, resulting in even higher speeds and larger capacities. This calls for even higher frequencies and lower jitter in reference clocks. While the upper frequency limit for these products was previously 500 MHz, Epson has further increased the frequency of its HFF crystal units*4 and developed a proprietary Epson IC optimized for the HFF crystal units, achieving frequencies up to 625 MHz and low phase jitter of 15 fs Typ. These features make them ideal for next-generation communication modules.
Epson plans to release the products with 2.0 x 1.6 mm size and ±20 x 10-6 frequency tolerance.

1. Fundamental mode: The natural frequency at which a crystal unit vibrates.
2. Jitter: Fluctuations in the clock period that can cause things such as fluctuations in displayed images and bit errors in data transmissions.
3. Differential output: A method that outputs frequency signals with opposite polarities. Differential output enables high-frequency transmission and has strong noise resistance.
4. HFF (High-frequency fundamental) crystal unit: A crystal unit that can oscillate at a high-frequency fundamental without compromising crystal chip strength because a photolithographic process is used to create an inverted-mesa structure in which only the vibrating area of the crystal chip is thinned to a thickness of several microns. HFF crystal units contribute to the stability of high-speed, high-capacity telecommunications because they can suppress nearby harmonic components.
